Daegu and Gyeongbuk swelter under 37.9C heat, but mornings offer cool relief

Residents in Daegu and the Gyeongbuk region are finding welcome relief from the peak of summer heat, with cooler mornings providing a noticeable change. Many are enjoying the milder starts to the day, which allow for more comfortable outdoor activities.

"It feels good to be alive in the mornings, it's quite cool," said Kim Young-ja, a 70-something woman who participates in morning exercises at Suseong못. She noted that the weather felt different, perhaps due to it being the final "dog days" of summer and the approaching end of the solar term "Balchug" (White Dew).

Choi Soon-hee, another morning exerciser, agreed. "Even though it's hot, I always come for morning exercises for my health," she said. "Because it's been so dry this year, there are no puddles, and not many mosquitoes. In the morning, it even feels like an autumn breeze."

Younger residents are also noticing the change. "It's good to play outside and not sweat as much as last week," said 12-year-old Cha Chan-yul, who cycled to Suseong못 with a friend. His friend, Lee Ju-hwan, also 12, added, "I don't even need to turn on the air conditioner at night, just a fan is fine. I didn't even bring ice water today, and it's not as hot as I expected."

However, the midday heat remains intense. The Daegu Meteorological Administration reported that as of 3 p.m. on August 14th, Hayang in Gyeongsan recorded the highest temperature at 37.9 degrees Celsius. Other areas also saw high temperatures, including Buk-gu in Daegu (36.4 C), Gyeongsan (36.2 C), Geumcheon in Cheongdo (36.1 C), and Seo-gu and Dong-gu in Daegu (35.9 C), with Gyeongju reaching 35.4 C. Heatwave advisories are in effect for several areas, including Daegu, Gumi, Yeongcheon, Gyeongsan, Cheongdo, Goryeong, Seongju, Chilgok, and northern Gimcheon.

Some northern parts of Gyeongbuk did experience rain, with Uljin and Mungyeong receiving precipitation. Uljin's Sogok recorded 32.5 mm of rainfall. The Daegu Meteorological Administration forecasts that a low-pressure system moving in from the Yellow Sea on August 15th will bring more clouds, preventing temperatures from rising significantly.
