Daegu Lowers Heatwave Alert as Intense Heat Persists

Daegu has downgraded its "major" heatwave warning to a standard "heatwave warning" as the region continues to grapple with intense heat. While the most severe warning has been lifted, daytime high temperatures are still exceeding 34 degrees Celsius.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Daegu Meteorological Administration changed the "major" heatwave warning for central Daegu and Gyeongsan and Goryeong in North Gyeongsang Province to a "heatwave warning." Despite expectations of some relief from scattered showers in the northern parts of North Gyeongsang Province, most areas saw daytime highs above 33 degrees Celsius. Records show temperatures reaching 35.6 degrees in Gampp, Gyeongju, and 34.4 degrees in Guryongpo, Pohang.

The heat is forecast to intensify again over the weekend, with Daegu expected to reach highs of 39 degrees Celsius, Pohang 37 degrees, and Andong 35 degrees. The Meteorological Administration cautioned that even with brief temperature drops during showers, the high humidity will lead to continued muggy conditions. They urged residents to remain vigilant about their health, as heatwaves and tropical nights are expected to persist.

This marks the first time a "major" heatwave warning, the highest alert level, has been issued since its introduction. Previously, on July 12, Pohang and Gyeongsan in North Gyeongsang Province were the first to receive this designation. The highest temperature recorded in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province this year was 39.1 degrees Celsius in Gyeongju on July 27.
