The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared the visit "illegal," stating that crossing the international border into the Syrian Arab Republic constitutes a blatant disregard for the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement, the ministry characterized such actions as hostile provocations that violate international law and the UN Charter. It also pointed to a breach of the 1974 Separation Agreement, which mandates respect for and adherence to ceasefire lines. Syria urged the international community to uphold its legal and political responsibilities by compelling Israeli authorities to cease these repeated violations and withdraw immediately and completely from Syrian territories.

Katz, during his visit to Israeli troops in southern Syria, asserted that the Israeli military would not abandon its positions in the Arab nation as long as "jihadist threats" persist against Israel. This statement comes shortly after high-level delegations from Syria and Israel, including Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, met in Jordan with U.S. mediation in an effort to de-escalate tensions.

These practices hostiles constitute a clear provocation and a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, as well as a breach of the obligations of the 1974 Separation Agreement, which requires respect for the ceasefire lines and not crossing them.

These tensions have been escalating due to repeated Israeli attacks and incursions into Syria, particularly since the reported fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The most recent reported Israeli strike occurred on August 18-19, targeting a military airport in northern Syria. Israel claimed the strike was in response to an imminent deployment of Turkish troops, a claim denied by both Turkey and Syria.
