Dangerous Lionfish Spotted in Croatia; Slovenia Battles Invasive Japanese Beetle

The Adriatic Sea is facing a dual threat from invasive species, with a dangerous lionfish sighted in Croatia and a damaging Japanese beetle posing a risk in Slovenia. In Croatia, a venomous lionfish was observed in the shallow waters of Stiniva bay on Vis island. Its sting delivers immediate, severe pain and can cause swelling and, in critical cases, breathing problems. Experts advise immediate action if stung, recommending immersing the affected area in water up to 45 degrees Celsius, followed by urgent medical attention. This heat-loving species first appeared in the Adriatic in 2019, and experts warn that rising sea temperatures are likely to increase its spread, prompting organized removal efforts by Croatia. Meanwhile, Slovenia is contending with the Japanese beetle, identified for the third consecutive year. This insect is considered one of the most harmful to plants and likely arrived from northern Italy. Slovenian authorities are urging residents to be vigilant for the beetle, especially near the Tepanje jug highway rest stop, where additional pheromone traps will be deployed. Citizens are asked to report any suspected sightings with photographic evidence to the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector, and Plant Protection.
