Danish Animal Welfare Group Phases Out Label to Boost Political Advocacy

Dyrenes Beskyttelse, a prominent Danish animal welfare organization, announced it is discontinuing its "Anbefalet af Dyrenes Beskyttelse" (Recommended by Dyrenes Beskyttelse) welfare label. This move signifies a strategic shift from product-specific labeling to a broader focus on political action and systemic change for farm animals.

The organization stated that the label's discontinuation is intended to bolster its political efforts aimed at improving the general welfare conditions for farm animals across Denmark. By phasing out the label, Dyrenes Beskyttelse seeks to intensify its advocacy for the transformation of Danish agriculture, pushing for more sustainable and animal-friendly practices.

A transition period will be in effect until the end of the year. Previously, the label indicated that a product met higher animal welfare standards, including requirements for more space, straw bedding, outdoor access, and opportunities for natural behaviors. With the label's removal, Dyrenes Beskyttelse will guide consumers toward choosing organic products as a minimum standard for meat and dairy purchases.

Furthermore, the organization is actively encouraging a shift towards more plant-based consumption patterns among the Danish public. This dual approach, strengthening political advocacy and guiding consumer choices, reflects Dyrenes Beskyttelse's renewed strategy to achieve more impactful and widespread improvements in animal welfare within the agricultural sector.
