Danish Foreign Minister: Europe and Denmark Need a Reliable Friend Like Morocco

Denmark and Morocco are preparing a strategic partnership that would cover political, security and economic cooperation, including climate and investment, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said after meeting Nasser Bourita in Copenhagen.

Rasmussen described the talks as positive and said the agreement could be concluded in Rabat in December. The two countries, he added, are taking the time needed to reach an arrangement that benefits both sides. They also plan to create a chamber of commerce.

The ministers discussed bilateral security cooperation, particularly extradition. Rasmussen said the issue would receive further attention under the strategic partnership now being prepared.

On Western Sahara, Rasmussen renewed Denmark’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan. He said Denmark, which is holding discussions with Morocco on the issue, could develop its position to bring it closer to the United States’ view.

“Morocco is our ally on the southern flank,” Rasmussen said. Bourita made the visit to Denmark as part of a working trip and was received by his Danish counterpart.
