Danish Prisons Set New Record for Inmate Numbers Amid Overcrowding Crisis

Danish prisons are facing unprecedented overcrowding, reaching a new record of 4,642 inmates in June. This figure represents a significant increase of 400 individuals within just two months, according to the trade journal Fængselsfunktionæren, citing data from the Danish Prison and Probation Service.

The situation has developed into being unmanageable for my colleagues who are out on the front lines.

The escalating number of inmates is placing immense strain on the system. Bo Yde Sørensen, the union chairman for the Prison and Probation Officers' Union (Fængselsforbundet), described the situation as "unmanageable for my colleagues on the front lines." The overcrowding leads to mandatory overtime for prison guards and a shortage of available cells, meaning more inmates than spaces.

Sørensen called for a joint meeting between the government, the Danish Prison and Probation Service, and the union to find solutions. He questioned whether the current conditions align with the standards of a Western European democracy. The recent penal reform, which extends sentences for violent crimes, is cited as a contributing factor to the rising inmate population.

We need to have a discussion about whether this is how we want to run prisons in a Western European democracy like the Danish one.

Mik Grüning, deputy director of the Danish Prison and Probation Service, acknowledged the "serious situation with staff shortages and very high overcrowding." He confirmed that a task force was established in May to address both short-term and long-term solutions for staffing and capacity. Grüning noted that despite the pressure, efforts to increase staffing levels have shown positive trends in recent years.

Justice Minister Nicolai Wammen stated he is highly aware of the challenges within the prisons. He highlighted initiatives to bolster the recruitment of prison officers and mentioned that the penal reform includes significant capacity expansion plans, though he cautioned that these measures will take time to yield full effects. Both Grüning and Wammen referred to the newly formed task force as a key mechanism for finding solutions, with the minister expressing openness to further measures.
