Danish tennis player Tauson loses in Toronto to Czech teenager

Danish tennis player Clara Tauson suffered an early exit from the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, falling to unseeded 20-year-old Nikola Bartunkova of the Czech Republic. The match concluded with a 6-3, 6-4 victory for Bartunkova, ending Tauson's campaign in the first round.

Tauson, who reached the semifinals of the same tournament last year, struggled to find her form. Although she broke Bartunkova's serve in the opening game, she was broken back twice in the first set. The second set saw a similar pattern, with Tauson falling behind early and then fighting back to level at 3-3, only for Bartunkova to secure another break and close out the match.

The defeat carries significant implications for Tauson's world ranking. Currently ranked 30th, she risks dropping around ten places. This potential slide could jeopardize her chances of being seeded at the upcoming US Open, where only the top 32 players receive a seeding. Tauson experienced a strong 2025 season, reaching a career-high of 12th in the world, but this current season has been more challenging, marked by injuries and a series of losses. She revealed in May that she has been dealing with two herniated discs, which have made it difficult to regain her previous level of play.
