Danjong Cultural Festival Enriched by 'The King and the Man' – Opens in Yeongwol on the 24th

Yeongwol, a region steeped in the tragic history of King Danjong, is set to host the 59th Danjong Cultural Festival from April 24th to 26th. This year's festival holds particular significance as it coincides with the growing public interest in Danjong's life, spurred by the recent release of the film 'The King and the Man' (Wang-sa-nam), which prominently features Yeongwol as its backdrop.

The festival aims to offer a more profound and multi-faceted exploration of Danjong's life and the historical context of his tragic reign. Moving beyond a simple commemoration, the events are structured to follow the narrative of his life, from his exile and longing to his final moments, thereby deepening the understanding of his historical significance and Yeongwol's identity. A new addition this year is the "Cheongnyeongpo Exile Event," symbolically depicting Danjong's transition from king to exile as he boards a ferry to Cheongnyeongpo.

Adding to the festival's appeal, director Jang Hang-jun of 'The King and the Man' will deliver a special lecture at the Yeongwol Academy, sharing insights into the film, history, and Yeongwol itself. His presence at the opening ceremony will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to interact with the creative force behind the film's historical portrayal. The festival also features traditional ceremonies such as the "Danjong and Queen Jeongsun Royal Wedding" and the "Danjong State Funeral," meticulously recreated based on historical records to honor the king's unfulfilled rites.

The festival culminates on the final day with the "Ghyeol-jul-dari" (hemp rope pulling) and procession, a designated intangible cultural heritage of Gangwon Province, bringing together residents and tourists. Actor Park Ji-hwan, who delivered a memorable performance as the Yeongwol County Governor in the film, will also participate. Various family-friendly programs, including a royal examination and a sports day, along with a culinary competition focusing on royal court cuisine using Yeongwol's specialties, are also planned. This comprehensive approach ensures that the festival offers a rich tapestry of historical, cultural, and entertainment experiences, deeply connecting visitors with the legacy of King Danjong and the spirit of Yeongwol.
