Danone Indonesia Powers Operations with Solar Energy, Wins Award

Danone Indonesia is significantly advancing its sustainability goals by harnessing solar energy to power its operations. The company has installed solar power plants at 11 production facilities, boasting a total installed capacity exceeding 10.4 megawatts peak (MWp). This strategic move aims to boost operational efficiency and reduce emissions.

Karyanto Wibowo, Director of Public Affairs & Sustainability at Danone Indonesia, stated that solar energy utilization is a key component of their decarbonization strategy. This strategy also encompasses environmental rehabilitation and conservation, biodiversity protection, optimizing transportation, operational efficiency, and using biomass as an alternative energy source. "The utilization of solar energy in various production facilities is one of our concrete steps in reducing the operational carbon footprint while increasing energy efficiency," Karyanto explained. He added that these efforts support Danone Indonesia's long-term commitment to achieving Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions target.

The 11 facilities equipped with solar power plants are located in Klaten, Ciherang, Banyuwangi, Mekarsari, Mambal, Cianjur, Langkat, Prambanan, Yogyakarta, Sentul, and Ciracas. Beyond solar power, Danone Indonesia is actively engaged in other decarbonization programs. These include planting over 2.6 million trees across 6,000 hectares of conservation areas, developing 20 biodiversity gardens (KEHATI), optimizing logistics, and using rice husk boilers as an alternative energy source in production facilities.

This commitment to renewable energy aligns with Danone's global pledge as a member of RE100, aiming for 100% renewable electricity across all global operations by 2030. In recognition of its efforts, Danone Indonesia received the Solar Awards 2026 in the industry category at the Indonesia Solar Summit (ISS) 2026. Fabby Tumiwa, CEO of the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), presented the award, highlighting its significance in encouraging more widespread adoption of solar energy and supporting Indonesia's transition to a low-carbon economy.
