Darkness after 7pm making Nigerians have more children — Fayose

Ayodele Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti State, has attributed Nigeria's population growth in rural communities to the lack of electricity. Speaking at his inauguration as the Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) board in Abuja, Fayose suggested that limited nighttime activities due to darkness after 7 p.m. leave residents with few options.

Fayose argued that in areas without electricity, "the people at that level have no alternative attraction." He explained that once it gets dark, "Everybody is engaging their wives. And the population simply becomes double." He presented this as a direct consequence of the lack of electricity, stating, "The simple problem is because there is lack of electricity."

The former governor believes that extending electricity to these communities would foster a more active nightlife and provide alternative forms of recreation. "People go to bed early. Their mind is simply prepared that, well, if this is the only available recreation, let me remain here," he said. Fayose asserted that with electricity, "there will be nightlife. There will be recreation outside your wife."
