Date set for opening of $195m Powerhouse Parramatta

Western Sydney's new cultural landmark, the Powerhouse Parramatta, is set to open to the public on November 7, marking the culmination of a four-year construction period. The $915 million museum represents a major investment in the region's arts and cultural infrastructure.

It's a big moment for arts and culture in the west of Sydney.

Upon opening, the museum will feature seven distinct zones, including a vast 2,200-square-meter space dedicated to "Task Eternal," billed as Australia's largest exhibition on space exploration. In total, the initial five exhibitions will present more than 3,000 objects, drawing from the Powerhouse's extensive collection and international loans.

The good news is it's also free, so for people under a bit of cost-of-living pressure, they'll be able to come in and see this incredible building, this great cultural institution for free.

New South Wales Arts Minister John Graham heralded the opening as a "big moment" for arts and culture in Western Sydney. He drew a parallel to the construction of the Sydney Opera House, suggesting that the Powerhouse Parramatta's opening will similarly be recognized as an incredible addition to the city's cultural landscape. Graham also highlighted that the museum will be free to enter, offering an accessible cultural experience amid cost-of-living pressures.

I think the reaction from the public will be the same as they see this incredible building on the banks of the river right in the heart of Parramatta.

Powerhouse CEO Lisa Havilah expressed her excitement for the opening, emphasizing that the museum is "built for the future." She stated that it aims to blend local knowledge with global perspectives, promising a program that is "as bold and diverse as the communities it serves." The museum's design includes an 18-meter-high space, and its inaugural exhibitions will explore themes such as space exploration and the cultural significance of shopping malls, with one exhibition featuring the historic Qantas Avro 504k aircraft.
