Daunakamakama punches her way to historic Commonwealth podium

Jasmine Daunakamakama has etched her name in Fiji's sporting history by guaranteeing at least a bronze medal in boxing at the Commonwealth Games. The 57kg fighter became the first Fijian female boxer to ever compete at the Games and has now secured a podium finish.

Her victory in the quarterfinals, decided by a split decision, marks a significant milestone in a journey that began when she was just 10 years old. Reflecting on her achievement, Daunakamakama expressed pride in her personal growth and credited her loved ones, boxing family, and friends for their unwavering support.

Each step that I take, my dream becomes more real. I’ve dreamt about this since I was 10. I think my younger self would be so proud of the person I’ve become today. It wouldn’t be possible without my loved ones, my boxing family, my family, my friends all around the Pacific and all around the world.

Despite the achievement, Daunakamakama revealed her primary motivation has always been internal rather than medal-driven. She focused on performing her best in each moment, considering the medal a welcome bonus to the personal development she has experienced throughout her Commonwealth Games campaign.

Now one win away from a gold medal bout, Daunakamakama remains determined, stating her journey is far from over. Her semifinal fight is scheduled for Saturday.
