Davido should apologize for trolling Edo governor with WAEC result, says lawyer

A Nigerian legal practitioner has publicly urged Afrobeats star David Adeleke, known as Davido, to issue an apology for sharing what he alleges to be Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo's West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result on social media. The call comes amidst political exchanges related to the upcoming August 15 Osun State governorship election.

I watched a video when Governor Okpebholo called the governor of my state, Adeleke, the dancing governor. And the governor’s relation, David Adeleke, replied by publishing the WAEC Secondary School leaving result of Governor Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State.

Timothy Tugbiyele, a lawyer and author, commented on the situation in a widely shared video. He explained that Davido posted the alleged WAEC result on his Instagram Story shortly after Governor Okpebholo had criticized Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido's uncle, for his leadership style and penchant for dancing. Okpebholo had questioned Adeleke's focus, stating, “Before somebody signs paper, he will dance.”

The result is not good enough, but it’s possible. The governor did a resit. We are not aware of that, but I think Davido, David Adeleke’s publication is inappropriate.

Reacting to Davido's post, Tugbiyele described the singer's action as inappropriate. While acknowledging that the alleged result might not be strong, he emphasized that it should not have been used to ridicule the governor. Tugbiyele pointed out that Davido and Governor Okpebholo operate at different social and professional levels, making their direct engagement, especially in this manner, unsuitable.

The lawyer suggested that Governor Adeleke should have handled the political jibe from his Edo State counterpart through official channels, perhaps via a commissioner of information or a special assistant. He argued that involving Davido, a relative, in such a dispute was a misstep. Tugbiyele concluded by appealing to Davido to apologize for what he deemed a disrespectful act.
