Dead whale discovered in Germany's Greifswalder Bodden

A dead whale has been found floating in the Greifswalder Bodden, a bay in Germany. Environmental Minister Till Backhaus announced the discovery, stating that the coast guard was alerted early on August 13th. An expert from the German Oceanographic Museum in Stralsund later confirmed the animal's death.

The whale measures about seven meters in length, according to the museum. Its species remains unidentified, a spokesperson said. The plan is to tow the whale to the small island of Dänholm, where it will undergo an autopsy at the Nautineum, a branch of the museum.

This discovery follows recent sightings of a whale in the Baltic Sea off the German and Polish coasts in the past few days. It is currently unclear if this dead whale is the same one that was repeatedly spotted. In the spring, a humpback whale, nicknamed "Timmy," stranded multiple times along the German Baltic coast. Despite a controversial and extensive operation to move it to the North Sea, the whale was found dead near the Danish island of Anholt a few days later.
