Death toll from Dewanganj clashes rises to three

The death toll from violent unrest in Nepal's Sunsari district has risen to three following the death of Rabindra Kumar Mehta, 21. Mehta died Tuesday at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, where he had been receiving advanced treatment for a gunshot wound sustained during clashes in Dewanganj on July 26.

He had been referred to Kathmandu for further treatment. We have now received confirmation that he died during treatment.

Mehta was among 10 people injured when security forces fired upon crowds to disperse violent confrontations between two groups in Kaptanganj. He had been airlifted to Kathmandu after initial treatment in Biratnagar, where surgeons performed emergency vascular surgery and later amputated his left leg due to severe complications and infection.

Rabindra succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday after several days in intensive care.

Another individual, 18-year-old Amit Yadav, remains hospitalized in Kathmandu in critical condition. Six other injured individuals are recovering in Biratnagar hospitals. The previous fatalities were identified as Om Prakash Mehta, 28, and Jaya Prakash Mehta, 21, both of whom also died from gunshot wounds sustained during the July 26 incident.

Surgeons in Biratnagar performed emergency vascular surgery, but his condition continued to deteriorate, prompting doctors to refer him to the teaching hospital.
