Death toll from Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March exceeds 4,000

The death toll from Israel’s offensive against Lebanon since March 2 has reached 4,057, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. The ministry said 12,121 people had also been wounded by the attacks, which have focused especially on the south.

The Health Emergency Operations Center reported 83 deaths from Israeli attacks on Friday, including three children, along with 141 injuries. Nabatiyeh recorded 17 deaths, while the town of Harouf reported 10. A Lebanese army sergeant was among those killed after suffering wounds in an attack in Touline, in the Marjayoun area of southern Lebanon.

Another Lebanese soldier died on Saturday in an Israeli attack while traveling on a road in a southern region. The health ministry and Lebanon’s National News Agency had already recorded at least 12 other soldiers killed, with the toll expected to rise as the Israeli escalation continues.

The attacks took place despite a ceasefire that came into force overnight between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah confirmed on Saturday that it was adhering to the new truce, but also claimed responsibility for an attack early in the morning against Israeli troops it said were attempting to infiltrate the Ali al Taher hills in the south.

In its statement, Hezbollah accused Israel of carrying out “intense airstrikes inside and outside the area of operations, attacking, as usual, innocent civilians to cover up its military failure.” It said that, “respecting the ceasefire,” it would still confront any attempt by the enemy to seize territory and expand its occupation. Hezbollah’s statement marked the first official confirmation by either side of the truce, after Israeli and U.S. media reported through anonymous official sources that it had taken effect.
