Debate star and physicist Guo Yanliang leaves a top European quantum lab for China

Guo Yanliang, a physicist known for his skills as a champion debater, has made a significant career move, departing from a leading European quantum laboratory to establish his own research group in Beijing. Guo has returned to China to take up a position as an associate professor at Renmin University of China. His immediate goal is to construct an ultracold atom experiment platform. This move follows a distinguished career that includes publications in prestigious journals like Science and Nature, and recognition on MIT Technology Review's "Innovators Under 35 China" list.

He explained that his decision to return was driven by China's superior support for his long-term research objectives. "The research environment here is more in line with my research characteristics," Guo told DeepTech, the Chinese branch of MIT Technology Review, last month. This suggests a strategic alignment between his scientific ambitions and the resources available in China.

The physicist's background in debate, honed through international competitions and online variety shows, appears to inform his approach to science. He sees research as an ongoing dialogue between different viewpoints, a process that he believes is better facilitated in his home country.
