"Deeply distressed": EAM Jaishankar condoles Vietnam boat tragedy

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conveyed profound grief following a tragic boat accident near Phu Quoc, Vietnam, which claimed the lives of 15 Indian nationals. In a statement posted on X, Jaishankar extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the swift recovery of those injured in the incident. The accident occurred when a tourist speedboat carrying 36 individuals, predominantly 32 Indian tourists, capsized off Hon May Rut Ngoai Island. The Indian Embassy in Vietnam later confirmed that all 15 fatalities were Indian tourists. Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan confirmed that two of the victims hailed from Keralam, identifying them as A.C. Thomas, 57, and Loveni Thomas, 56. He stated that the state government is collaborating with the Ministry of External Affairs to expedite repatriation procedures. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Minister Kondapalli Srinivas also expressed deep sorrow, noting that approximately 15 to 16 Indians were feared dead. He reported that three individuals from Andhra Pradesh lost their lives, and one person from the state was admitted to the ICU, with around 33 people traveling from their state. Vietnam's Prime Minister Le Minh Hun issued an urgent directive for authorities to prioritize search and rescue operations and provide assistance to the victims and their families.
