Deeprose Gurung's 'Samaya Yatra' Exhibition Explores Time, Memory, and Femininity

Kathmandu is currently hosting 'Samaya Yatra' (Journey of Time), a solo exhibition by artist Deeprose Gurung, at the Shashi Art Gallery. The exhibition, running until August 29, showcases a collection of paintings that delve into the complexities of women, relationships, memory, and childhood experiences.

Gurung's work predominantly features female figures, reflecting his deep connection to the women in his life. Recurring motifs such as parrots, moons, paper planes, and paper boats are woven into the compositions. The artist uses parrots as a symbol of communication and trust, drawing parallels between the birds and women's ability to express themselves openly.

Childhood memories and imagination are explored through symbols like paper planes and boats, representing flight and travel. A notable departure from the predominantly female subjects is a painting that includes a male nude figure, incorporating the artist's palette to highlight the creative process. The exhibition also includes a work featuring a male nude figure, with the artist's palette integrated into the composition.

Samjhana Rajbhandari, director of Shashi Art Studio, lauded Gurung's unique style, particularly his use of lines. She identified him as a distinct emerging artist in Nepal, noting his development at the Shashi Art Studio, which has become a hub for emerging artists.
