Defense Minister Crosetto: Italian troops in Saudi Arabia are defensive, not wartime

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has strongly refuted claims that the deployment of Italian military personnel to Saudi Arabia constitutes Italy entering a war. "Nothing could be more absurd," Crosetto stated, expressing bewilderment that the move is being presented as news when it was previously explained in parliamentary committees. He noted that the repositioning of air force assets from Kuwait to Saudi Arabia was announced months ago. Crosetto explained that Italian contingents are engaged in existing, authorized missions in the Middle East, including in Bahrain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. These missions are purely defensive, aimed at protecting Italian citizens and interests, and supporting Gulf countries facing attacks. Regarding potential involvement in the Strait of Hormuz or Red Sea security, Crosetto reiterated Italy's stance: intervention will only occur if conditions for peace are met and after all institutional steps, including a parliamentary vote, are completed. He acknowledged the evolving geopolitical landscape, with Iran attempting to broaden the conflict, but stressed Italy's commitment to peace-oriented operations. Crosetto also addressed support for Ukraine, emphasizing its defense of freedom against Russia's large-scale military mobilization. He assured that defense spending would remain as decided by Parliament, with no increase this year.
