Dejan Lovren Slams Vandalism at Međugorje Shrine: 'Holy Places Are Not to Be Touched!'

Former Croatian national football player Dejan Lovren has issued a strong condemnation of the vandalism that occurred at the shrine in Međugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The incident involved the defacement of a statue of the Virgin Mary and the setting fire to an outdoor altar at the Church of St. James.

Lovren took to his Instagram profile to express his outrage, calling the perpetrators "cowards." He emphasized the sanctity of the site, stating, "Holy places are not to be touched. The Mother of God is not to be desecrated. A place where millions seek peace and faith is not to be attacked." He asserted that Međugorje belongs to believers, not to hatred.

"I stand with every pilgrim and every Croat who feels this insult," Lovren declared, urging prayers for the conversion of those responsible. He concluded his message with a call to action: "And never remain silent when the faith is attacked." Lovren, known for his strong religious convictions, highlighted the significant role faith plays in his life.

The vandalism occurred overnight between July 27 and 28. Images circulating on social media showed the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary covered with a white cloth, and its pedestal obscured to hide graffiti and messages left by the perpetrators. Believers gathered at the site reacted with prayer, with many seen kneeling before the covered statue, visibly moved.

Police are currently investigating the incident. The vandalism, which also damaged other prayer sites within the sanctuary, has prompted calls for peace and unity on social media. This act has deeply disturbed the local community and faithful who visit the shrine seeking spiritual solace.
