Delcy Rodríguez announces national consultation for justice reform begins in June

Caracas, May 22 (EFE) - Venezuela is set to embark on a significant judicial overhaul, with Vice President Delcy Rodríguez announcing that a national consultation for reforming the criminal justice system will commence on June 1. This initiative aims to tackle deep-seated issues plaguing the Venezuelan legal framework, primarily focusing on overcoming judicial delays, combating corruption, and addressing the disproportionate impact of the justice system on the poor.

Rodríguez stated that an initial diagnosis revealed three major challenges: judicial backlog, corruption within the courts, and the criminalization of poverty. She highlighted that a staggering 68% of incarcerated individuals come from less privileged socioeconomic backgrounds. The Vice President also denounced instances where judges allegedly solicit 'commissions' or extort individuals for release measures, underscoring the severity of the corruption problem.

To address the issue of judicial delays, Rodríguez mentioned signing a reform to the Organic Law of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), which increases the number of magistrates from 20 to 32. She expressed hope that this expansion will lead to increased judicial activity and efficiency. The Vice President also issued a strong call for the reform process to remain apolitical, urging stakeholders to avoid politicizing or partisan manipulation of an initiative genuinely aimed at transforming the penal system.

This comprehensive reform process, initiated by a commission established in April, seeks to eradicate the persistent 'ills' within the judicial system. The national consultation is envisioned as a crucial step in gathering diverse perspectives to build a more equitable and effective justice system for all Venezuelans.
