Delhi NCR weather LIVE: IMD issues red alert as heavy showers lash capital for 2nd day

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert across all 11 districts of Delhi, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. This alert comes as the national capital and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) are experiencing a second consecutive day of intense downpours.

Gurugram, in particular, has been severely affected, with widespread waterlogging causing significant traffic congestion. In response, the Gurugram administration advised corporate offices and educational institutions to allow employees and students to work or study from home on Tuesday. Schools were also directed to shift to online classes.

Delhi has already recorded above-normal rainfall this monsoon season. As of August 24, the Safdarjung observatory registered 246.2 mm of rain, a 29% excess over the normal 191.1 mm. Other observatories like Palam, Lodi Road, Ridge, and Ayanagar also reported rainfall significantly above average.

The IMD's warning forecasts moderate to heavy showers across Delhi, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated locations. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected, raising concerns about further waterlogging and potential transport delays throughout the region.
