Delhi woman cooking rotis shot dead by husband; family cites domestic violence, social stigma

A 30-year-old woman was shot dead by her husband in Delhi's Sangam Vihar area on Thursday afternoon while she was preparing food for him. The accused, Shubham Rajput, is currently absconding.

She used to tell me that he beat her. I asked her to leave him, but she was afraid of societal pressure. He used to threaten her often.

According to the victim Kavita's family, she endured domestic violence throughout her marriage but felt constrained by societal pressure from leaving her husband. Her sister told news agency PTI that Kavita had reported her husband's frequent threats.

When I reached there, I saw her body. She sustained four gunshots - one on the hand, two in the stomach and one on the neck. A pistol has been recovered. He did this with planning. He had sent his mother and brother away a day earlier so that only he is held accountable.

Family members allege the murder was premeditated. Kavita's brother-in-law, Suresh, stated that Rajput had sent his mother and brother away the day before the incident. He also claimed Rajput planned the murder, evidenced by the four gunshot wounds Kavita sustained. A pistol was recovered from the scene.

After a fight, he shot her around 4 pm while she was making rotis for him in the kitchen.

Investigators are reportedly looking into allegations of Rajput's gambling addiction, significant financial debts totaling around ₹25-30 lakh, and potential infidelity. Suresh claimed Rajput pressured Kavita to sell land to cover his debts, a request she refused. Kavita's sister also accused Rajput of having extramarital affairs, which frequently led to arguments between the couple.

The deceased had a plot of nearly the same value. He used to pressure her to sell it to repay the debt, but she refused. Two to three of his friends are also involved in this crime.
