Delta Assembly warns politicians against violence ahead of 2027 elections

Delta State lawmakers have warned politicians and their supporters not to turn the 2027 elections into a contest of bitterness and violence. Speaker Guwor Emomotimi Dennis urged parties to compete through ideas, programmes, competence and service to the people.

Addressing lawmakers as the House resumed plenary after its 2026 annual recess, Guwor said candidates should present plans capable of improving residents’ lives rather than rely on personal attacks, division or violence. He said campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections began on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on September 9.

The speaker called on parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to act responsibly throughout the electoral process. He said elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair and said “ideas, programmes, competence, character and service” should guide the campaigns.

Guwor also described the planned increase in Delta State’s constituencies from 29 to 38 as historic. The nine additional constituencies, he said, would give more communities direct representation and strengthen grassroots participation in legislative affairs. “Representation remains at the heart of democracy,” he said.

The speaker directed lawmakers to address pending bills, motions and petitions promptly. He also urged committee members to apply lessons from leadership training at London Business School. Guwor said the assembly would continue supporting legislation, oversight and representation, and praised the state government’s economic and investment summit for presenting Delta’s investment potential to investors in Nigeria and abroad.
