Democratic Party Nominates Song Young-gil, Kim Nam-jun for Incheon By-Elections

The Democratic Party of Korea has initiated its candidate selection process for the June 3rd by-elections, making significant strategic nominations for the Incheon Yeonsu-gap and Gyeyang-eul constituencies. Former party leader Song Young-gil has been nominated for Yeonsu-gap, a district considered a challenging but crucial stronghold for the party. Concurrently, former presidential spokesperson Kim Nam-jun, a political newcomer but a close associate of President Lee Jae-myung, has been nominated for Gyeyang-eul.

This dual nomination is interpreted as a calculated move by the party leadership, aiming to balance the need for strong candidates with the complex internal power dynamics. Placing Kim Nam-jun, a figure associated with President Lee, in the more favorable Gyeyang-eul constituency, while Song Young-gil, a heavyweight with a history of five terms as a National Assembly member and former Incheon mayor, is tasked with the tougher Yeonsu-gap, reflects this strategy. The party acknowledges Yeonsu-gap as a "key strategic area that must be defended."

The decision also appears to address sensitivities surrounding Song Young-gil's political future. Having previously ceded his seat to President Lee Jae-myung for the presidential election, Song's potential return to politics outside his traditional base in Incheon had been a point of discussion. The party's decision to place him in Yeonsu-gap, rather than a district outside Incheon, suggests an effort to manage these internal considerations gracefully. As the party moves forward, these nominations set the stage for further candidate selections in other by-election districts, with a target to complete the process by the first week of May.
