Democratic socialist Francesca Hong challenges Wisconsin establishment in gubernatorial primary

Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist and Wisconsin state representative, is making waves in the upcoming gubernatorial primary, challenging the traditional Democratic Party establishment. The Wall Street Journal highlighted her campaign, noting how she is unsettling party insiders as the August 11 primary approaches.

Hong, who also works as a part-time bartender, has emerged as a frontrunner in recent polls, outpacing former lieutenant governors and other prominent Democratic figures. Her platform advocates for significant government intervention across various sectors, including universal childcare, expanded public transportation, publicly run grocery stores, and student loan forgiveness. She also supports legalizing marijuana to fund broadband expansion, establishing a state-run development bank, and implementing Medicare for All.

The Journal detailed Hong's more progressive stances, such as supporting a 32-hour workweek without pay cuts, abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), restoring voting rights for felons, and advocating for the eventual abolition or significant reduction of prisons and police. Republicans have labeled her and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as "communists," using her platform to attack Democratic voters.

Democratic Party insiders are reportedly concerned that Hong's far-left ideology could jeopardize their chances in the November general election, especially since the incumbent Democratic governor, Tony Evers, is not seeking a third term.

Despite concerns from the party establishment, Hong emphasizes her ability to connect with voters disillusioned by establishment politics and burdened by the cost of living. She identifies herself as a wage earner, the daughter of Korean immigrants, a single mother, and a renter. Recent polling shows her leading the primary field, though a significant portion of voters remain undecided.
