Dengue fever outbreak escalates in Phu Quy, raising serious concerns

Dengue fever is spreading rapidly in the Phú Quý special administrative region of Lâm Đồng province, with a significant and concerning rise in severe cases. As of August 4, the region had recorded 82 dengue fever cases, six of which were severe, impacting all six villages on the island.

This outbreak is considered the largest in recent years, prompting health officials and local authorities to launch a series of urgent measures to curb its expansion. Phú An village has emerged as the epicenter, reporting 43 cases, more than half of the total, including two severe instances. Quý Thạnh and Mỹ Khê villages have each recorded 12 cases, with two severe cases in Quý Thạnh and one in Mỹ Khê. Triều Dương village reported two cases, one of which is severe.

The health sector has identified nine "outbreak nests" across the island, with Phú An accounting for four, Quý Thạnh for three, and Mỹ Khê and Triều Dương for one each. While seven of these nests have been treated and six declared closed, three remain under active monitoring and treatment. Two of these are undergoing supplementary spraying to break the transmission chain.

Phú Quý Vice Chairman Đỗ Minh Chức stated that the region has initiated a comprehensive environmental sanitation campaign and larvicide application across the island. A large-scale operation in Phú An village, including widespread mosquito spraying, is also underway. Authorities are requiring households in critical areas to sign commitments to prevent mosquito breeding and are intensifying public awareness campaigns through mobile loudspeakers and leaflets.

Epidemiologists warn that dengue fever can quickly become severe, leading to shock, multiple organ failure, and even death if not detected and treated promptly. With cases still on the rise, proactive larvicide control, elimination of mosquito breeding sites, and immediate medical attention upon fever onset are crucial to limiting the spread on Phú Quý island.

To control the epidemic, Phu Quy special administrative region has launched a campaign for overall environmental sanitation and larvicide eradication on the entire island; at the same time, organizing another large-scale campaign in Phu An village combined with chemical spraying to kill mosquitoes.
