Denmark tightens checks amid suspected AI fraud

Denmark is tightening its approach to academic integrity by introducing measures to combat the rising threat of artificial intelligence-assisted cheating in high schools. Starting next week with the new school year, approximately 9,000 upper-secondary students annually will be required to verbally defend their substantial written assignments, known as 'Større skriftlige opgave.' Education Minister Magnus Heunicke announced that the ministry will collaborate with schools to ensure the effective implementation of this new requirement. This oral defense is part of an immediate package of three measures aimed at curbing AI fraud. Further steps include mandating that schools utilize monitoring software during computer-based exams. This involves installing firewalls to filter access to the school network during assessments and lessons. Additionally, schools are urged to encourage students to complete their written assignments under controlled conditions within the school premises. The aim is to foster an understanding that relying on AI is detrimental to their own learning. This approach will allow educators to observe students' work processes, provide relevant feedback, and establish a more accurate basis for assessment. The Ministry of Education acknowledges that AI presents a growing challenge to teaching and examinations, expressing hope that these new regulations will provide clearer guidelines on when AI use is prohibited for students. The government is also developing a comprehensive national strategy for AI integration across the entire education sector.
