Deputies to consider agreement expanding consular cooperation in Mercosur

Paraguay's Chamber of Deputies is set to debate a 2019 agreement aimed at enhancing consular cooperation among Mercosur member states and associated nations. The accord, signed in Santa Fe, Argentina, seeks to establish mechanisms for providing consular assistance to citizens of member states who find themselves in a city, region, or country without their own diplomatic or consular representation. This initiative, which has already received approval from the Senate, underscores the commitment of Mercosur and its partners to prioritize the welfare of their nationals abroad. The agreement emphasizes the deepening and updating of reciprocal cooperation in consular affairs, ensuring that citizens can access protection and assistance from any consular representation of another signatory state if their own is unavailable. The participating states, including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Chile, reaffirm the priority they place on objectives that directly benefit their citizens.
