Deputy Speaker Tayebwa Urges Newly Ordained Priests, Deacons to Serve With Humility

Uganda's Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has called on newly ordained priests and deacons to embrace humility, compassion, and inclusiveness in their service to the Catholic Church. Tayebwa's remarks came during the ordination of eight priests and 16 deacons at Nyamitanga Cathedral in the Mbarara Archdiocese. He emphasized their role as ambassadors of the Church, tasked with fostering unity, peace, and social harmony within their communities.

I want to appreciate the Catholic Church for heeding the NRM Government's call to roll out poverty-eradication programmes at household and community level, noting that the initiatives are improving Ugandans' livelihoods.

Tayebwa lauded the Catholic Church for its active participation in government-led poverty-eradication initiatives at both household and community levels, noting their positive impact on Ugandans' livelihoods. He pledged the government's ongoing commitment to collaborating with the Church and other development partners to address societal challenges. However, he also pointed to critical areas requiring immediate attention, specifically citing corruption within the Parish Development Model, issues in job recruitment, and the state of public health facilities, stressing that public resources must reach their intended recipients.

The Deputy Speaker further acknowledged the Church's support for government programs and its role during recent elections. He expressed gratitude for the Church's prayers for President Yoweri Museveni and other national leaders. Tayebwa reiterated the vital importance of the partnership between the government and the Church in advancing development, peace, unity, and the overall welfare of Ugandans, underscoring its crucial role in national progress.
