Desert Express: The train set to cut travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to 50 minutes

The United Arab Emirates is on the cusp of a significant transportation upgrade with the upcoming opening of a high-speed rail line connecting its capital, Abu Dhabi, with the bustling metropolis of Dubai. This new rail link, part of the larger Etihad Rail network, promises to drastically cut travel time between the two major cities to around 50 minutes, covering the 150-kilometer distance.

The Dubai station, named Al Yalayis, is slated to welcome passengers starting September 30, 2026. This date coincides with the opening of the Al Dhaid Station in Sharjah. The 900-kilometer rail network is being rolled out in phases. Currently, two stations are operational: one in Abu Dhabi's Mohammed Bin Zayed City and another in Fujairah, both inaugurated on June 30, 2026.

Further expansion is planned throughout late 2026 and early 2027. Stations in Liwa and Madinat Zayed (Abu Dhabi) will open on November 30, 2026. Three more Abu Dhabi stations in Al Dhannah, Al Sila, and Al Mirfa will open on December 30, 2026. The final announced station, in University City, Sharjah, is scheduled for March 30, 2027.

Once fully operational, the passenger trains are expected to reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. Etihad Rail estimates the network could transport up to 36 million passengers annually by 2030. Beyond facilitating travel between the emirates, the project is anticipated to yield economic benefits exceeding $24.5 billion over the next 50 years. While part of a broader regional rail plan, the project's advancement highlights the UAE's commitment to infrastructure development.
