Details Emerge of Tragic Accident in Dzūkija: Opel Drove Against Traffic

A fatal traffic accident occurred on July 10 around 4:45 PM in the Varėna district of Lithuania. Police reported that an Opel Vectra, driven by a man born in 1991, may have veered into the oncoming lane on the Antakalnis–Jieznas–Alytus–Merkinė road.

The Opel collided head-on with a Subaru Forester, driven by a man born in 1958. Tragically, the passenger in the Opel, a woman born in 1967, died as a result of the crash. Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital.

Emergency services, including firefighters, worked to free two trapped individuals, who were then handed over to medical personnel. Sadly, a third victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident took place in the village of Kurmiškiai, within the Merkinė eldership. Traffic on the affected road was halted for approximately four hours while services operated.
