Details of the crime against Valentina Vanegas, an Itagüí Mayor's Office official: her partner was found holding her by the neck

A 29-year-old man faces pre-trial detention in a Colombian prison for the alleged brutal murder of his partner, Valentina Vanegas Gallego, 28. The incident, which has deeply shocked the municipality of Itagüí in Antioquia, occurred on June 15 in the Samaria Rosales neighborhood.

Vanegas, who worked as a manager for the local Institute of Recreation, Culture, and Sports and was a mother to a young child, was reportedly fatally wounded by a stab to the right lung during a heated argument. Neighbors alerted authorities after hearing the victim's cries for help. Police apprehended the suspect at the scene, reportedly as he was trying to silence Vanegas.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, Vanegas succumbed to her injuries. Authorities recovered the weapon used in the assault. During court proceedings, prosecutors charged the man with aggravated femicide, but he pleaded not guilty.

Further investigation revealed a pattern of ongoing physical and psychological abuse within the domestic environment. Court records indicate the accused had previously been convicted in 2019 for domestic violence against Vanegas.
