Devastating floods hit Nepal-China border, villages disappear, over 95 dead

Sudden floods and landslides have ravaged the Himalayan border region between Nepal and Chinese Tibet, transforming parts of the area into a disaster zone. As of the latest reports, at least 95 people have been confirmed dead, with hundreds more listed as missing. Authorities fear the final death toll could be significantly higher.

The torrential waters and subsequent mudslides have obliterated houses, roads, and bridges, causing severe damage to critical infrastructure, including hydroelectric power plants and communication networks. The Nepalese province of Rasuwa appears to have borne the brunt of the catastrophe, but the Chinese side of the border, in the Tibetan region of Shigatse, has also experienced severe consequences.

Reports indicate that dozens of people perished on the Nepalese side in the early morning hours. Simultaneously, China's state agency Xinhua reported that a landslide on the Nepalese side triggered the disaster at the Gyirong border crossing. This has led to the disruption of traffic, communications, and power supply, with floodwaters sweeping away everything in their path.

Concerns are mounting over potential further casualties on the Chinese side, as a number of individuals remain unaccounted for in the Gyirong district. The scale of the tragedy is amplified by the large number of missing persons. The Nepal Tourism Board stated that 384 travelers are missing following the floods in Rasuwa district, comprising 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepalis. Among the missing are at least 105 Indians and 12 Britons, with the exact numbers of missing Germans, Spaniards, Americans, South Africans, and citizens of other countries yet to be determined.

Witnesses describe scenes of utter chaos. Suman Chalise, a 34-year-old teacher from Nuwakot district, recounted seeing eight or nine trucks, along with houses and people, being swept away by the water. "It was absolutely horrific," she described the scene. Images from the affected areas show houses submerged in muddy water, cars being carried away by the current, and vast amounts of silt covering roads and settlements.

Rescue teams face immense challenges, as helicopters are unable to land in the most severely affected areas due to weather conditions, water levels, and the challenging terrain. The Nepalese army is attempting to organize aerial aid, but a spokesperson warned that landings would only be possible once the water levels recede sufficiently. Meanwhile, authorities fear that entire villages have vanished beneath the water and debris, with district administrators warning of potential massive loss of life and property.
