Dramatic Search Underway After Small Plane Crashes into Austrian Lake

A dramatic search is underway on Austria's Lake Attersee after a small, two-seater aircraft crashed into the water Wednesday morning. Rescue teams are actively searching for potential survivors, but as of now, there is no trace of the aircraft or the individuals who were aboard.

The plane, which departed from Salzburg at 11:04 AM, lost contact with air traffic control around 11:23 AM. According to eyewitness accounts cited by the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung, the aircraft suddenly began to lose altitude rapidly before plunging into the lake near the municipality of Steinbach am Attersee and disappearing beneath the surface.

Data from Flightradar24 indicated the aircraft was traveling at approximately 174 kilometers per hour and was at an altitude of about 1,770 meters just before the incident. Neither wreckage nor occupants were visible after the crash. Six fire brigades and three water rescue teams have been deployed to the scene. The search is complicated by the lake's considerable depth, reportedly reaching up to 100 meters in the area of the crash.

A witness from Steinbach described hearing the plane's engine, followed by a sudden silence, and then the sirens of emergency services. "Apparently, the plane sank into the lake, and a helicopter is currently circling very low over the water," the witness told Kronen Zeitung. This incident follows a separate aviation tragedy in Krems, Austria, just days prior, which resulted in two fatalities.
