French officials described the operation as potentially the largest peacetime evacuation in the country's history.

High winds in Spain have further complicated efforts, causing two major fire fronts to merge. In France's southwestern Gironde region, a large military transport aircraft, an Airbus A400M Atlas, has been deployed to assist 18 other planes in the challenging firefighting operations.
