DFB-Pokal: Borussia Dortmund beats Hamburg fifth-tier club 5-0

The Eimsbütteler sensation did not materialize. HEBC Hamburg held Borussia Dortmund at bay for half an hour, then the Bundesliga runners-up pulled away to win 5-0 in the DFB-Pokal.

The fifth-tier club resisted the favorite’s pressure early and even mounted several attacks to the delight of its supporters. Dortmund created few clear chances until Felix Nmecha’s shot in the 25th minute forced a strong save from HEBC goalkeeper Jannik Schoon.

The breakthrough came through an own goal. HEBC captain Janek Wrede deflected Julian Ryerson’s shot into his own net in the 33rd minute. The moment carried an unusual twist: Wrede works full-time in Hamburg’s scouting department, meaning he scored against Dortmund almost at his workplace.

Daniel Svensson doubled Dortmund’s lead three minutes later. Eighteen-year-old Samuele Inacio then scored twice before halftime, putting the result beyond doubt. Fabio Silva added the fifth goal in the 59th minute, although the Hamburg side continued to play courageously.

The move to Volksparkstadion brought 45,917 spectators, the largest crowd ever for a DFB-Pokal match featuring a fifth-tier team. After the game, Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer said the team had “fulfilled its duty,” while adding that HEBC had not played badly and that Dortmund could have scored several more. HEBC’s two goalkeepers, teacher Nils Ahmann and educator Jannik Schoon, shared the match as planned. Ahmann called the atmosphere an “indescribable feeling.” Before kickoff, Dortmund also announced the loan signing of Arsenal winger Ethan Nwaneri as a replacement for the badly injured Giannis Konstantelias.
