Diane Abbott and Joani Reid Readmitted as Labour MPs

Diane Abbott and Joani Reid, Members of Parliament, have been readmitted to the Labour Party, regaining the parliamentary whip less than two weeks into Andy Burnham's premiership. The party confirmed that both decisions followed independent disciplinary procedures, with the leadership asserting no role in the outcomes.

The Labour party expects the highest standards from our elected representatives and party members. The party assesses any alleged breaches of such standards independently of the leadership and political interference.

Abbott, often referred to as the 'mother of the House,' faced a second suspension last summer. This followed remarks she made about racism, which had previously led to the withdrawal of the whip in 2023. Following an independent investigation, Abbott has since apologized and received a formal warning from the party.

Following a process conducted under Labour party rules and approved by the independent review board, Diane Abbott and Joani Reid have been readmitted to the Labour party and have had the Labour whip restored in the House of Commons.

Reid, the MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven elected in 2024, had voluntarily stepped back from the whip in March. Her husband's arrest on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service, in a case linked to China, prompted her decision. Importantly, Reid herself has never been accused of any wrongdoing, and Labour party sources indicate she was not part of the police investigation into alleged Chinese spying.

Diane Abbott has also apologised following the independent process coming to an end. All Labour elected representatives must be mindful at all times of their platform and the responsibilities that come with that privilege.
