Diaspora Christians write Tinubu, demand urgent action over killings

The Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans (CANAN USA) has implored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to elevate the protection of vulnerable communities to a national emergency. This urgent plea follows a series of relentless and deadly attacks in Plateau, Benue, and Kaduna states.

In an open letter addressed to the President, the group conveyed profound grief and an "unwavering conviction" that the Nigerian government must intensify efforts to safeguard its citizens. They highlighted the devastating consequences of these attacks, which include killings, maiming, displacement, abductions, and destruction of property. A particularly harrowing incident cited was the killing of nine members of the extended family of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, a prominent leader in the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) and an advocate for communities facing persistent violence in Plateau State.

The association lamented the loss of "fathers, mothers, children, relatives, dreams, and futures violently extinguished," emphasizing that these are not mere statistics but represent devastated families and communities forced to mourn their dead. The letter also referenced an attack on July 27, 2026, in Naridon village, Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, where armed attackers reportedly killed at least 30 people, including eight children, and burned homes. Residents alleged that security personnel arrived hours after the attack, prompting CANAN USA to call for a "thorough and transparent investigation."

CANAN USA urged President Tinubu to take immediate action in four key areas. These include providing "immediate and appropriate special security protection" for Rev. Furthermore, the association advocated for enhanced federal government security arrangements for communities under repeated attacks in Plateau, Kaduna, Benue, and other states, stressing that "Security must become preventive, not merely responsive."
