'Dibu' Martínez Questions Future with Argentina After World Cup Final Loss

Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez, the starting goalkeeper for Argentina, has raised questions about his continued role with the national team after their defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. The 33-year-old expressed his feelings on Instagram, stating, "There is much to reflect on and see how to move forward, and if it is time to step aside."

Martínez, who made 11 saves during the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, was visibly emotional after the match. He shared, "I dreamed we would win it again, I dreamed of bringing it to Argentina and making history once more. The truth is the pain is difficult to explain." He added, "I am truly sorry, I tried my best to help my country and my teammates."

Defender Nicolás Otamendi, who had previously announced that this World Cup would be his last, posted a heartfelt tribute to his teammates, calling them his "safe place." Nicolás Tagliafico, despite playing through visible leg pain, reflected on reaching another final and giving their all on the field, stating, "It hurts a lot, I won't deny it.
