DiCaprio, Bezos Launch $200 Million Mission to Save 100 Endangered Species

A significant conservation effort, the Phoenix Species Project, has been launched with a $200 million commitment to aid 100 of the world's most threatened species. This initiative, a collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio's conservation organization Re:wild and Jeff Bezos's Bezos Earth Fund, represents the largest single financial pledge dedicated solely to the recovery of critically endangered animals. The project's strategy centers on species with critically low populations, requiring focused conservation strategies for their survival, rather than broad environmental programs. Discussions for this initiative began in 2021, involving DiCaprio, Re:wild CEO Wes Sechrest, Jeff Bezos, and Lauren Sánchez Bezos. The planning process expanded to include conservation groups, Indigenous communities, and government representatives from various nations. This collaborative approach led to an understanding of the diverse threats facing wildlife in different regions, including habitat destruction, climate change, invasive species, and illegal trade.
