Did Serial Predator Mika Moring Murder Saara Arva, Who Disappeared in 2019? Trial Begins

The trial of Mika Moring, a man identified as a serial predator, is set to begin in Kuopio, where he stands accused of murdering Saara Arva and aggravated kidnapping.

Arva disappeared in the autumn of 2019, and her remains were discovered five years later. She had met Moring in Helsinki in April 2019. At the time, Arva, 35, was living in a housing unit for the homeless and those undergoing addiction rehabilitation. Moring, who has a history of convictions for numerous sexual and violent crimes against women, had a pattern of targeting vulnerable individuals, including those frequenting shelters for the homeless and addicts.

The case is still open and investigative actions are being taken

Following her encounter with Moring, Arva stopped paying her rent and vanished from her loved ones. Her family reported her missing in the fall. Police received tips that led them to Vesanto, where locals reported seeing a dark Audi and a couple who appeared to be avoiding others. Witnesses also noted signs of assault on Arva's face. The last sighting of Arva and Moring was on August 31, 2019, in Konnevesi, approximately 30 kilometers from Vesanto. Police suspect Arva died no later than September 1, 2019.

The body has not been found. Searches have been conducted and will continue in the fall.

Moring has admitted in interrogations to traveling around Finland with Arva for months, sleeping in their car, in wilderness cabins, and at campsites. However, he has denied guilt in the preliminary investigation. The search for Arva's body spanned years until a fisherman found her remains in the Vesanto area near a lake in April 2024.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, Moring is also suspected in another homicide case. Helsinki police are investigating the death of another young woman who was seen with Moring, believed to be Katja Miinalainen, 28. She was last seen alive in Kiikala on August 14, 2022. Police first announced this investigation in October 2022, stating that Moring had picked Miinalainen up in Kiikala. They reportedly traveled and camped in various remote areas across Finland. Miinalainen has been missing since then. The investigation remains open, with ongoing investigative actions, but her body has not been found. Moring has denied any involvement in Miinalainen's death.
