Diego Luna leads Mexican presence at 2026 Toronto Film Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled new additions to its 2026 lineup, highlighting a robust international presence with films from acclaimed directors such as Diego Luna, Radu Jude, and Denis Côté. The Centrepiece program, a core section of the festival, will showcase 54 films from 50 countries, featuring new works from established names like Anthony Chen and Valeska Grisebach.

Mexican star Diego Luna is set to participate with 'Ashes,' a co-production between Mexico and Spain, which will have its North American premiere at TIFF. The program also includes 'Flies' by Fernando Eimbcke and 'Love is the monster' by Neto Villalobos Brenes, a world premiere co-produced by Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Chile, and Mexico. The Latin American representation extends to films like 'After Elena' and 'The bovine with the curved horns.'

Spain's contribution to the Centrepiece section includes Raúl García's animated film 'The Violinist,' a co-production with Singapore and Italy, and 'Rehearsals for a Revolution' directed by Pegah Ahangarani. In the experimental Wavelengths section, Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso will present 'La libertad doble,' a follow-up to his 2001 film 'La libertad.' Spanish director Natalia Marín will debut 'Crónica del cansancio' in North America.

The 51st edition of TIFF is scheduled to take place in Toronto from September 10 to 20. Earlier in July, organizers announced that the festival would open with the world premiere of 'Being Heumann,' a film focusing on disability rights activist Judy Heumann, starring Ruth Madeley.
