Disabled Private Boat Drifts Offshore, Rescued Through Cooperation Between Wang’an and Fenggui

A private boat carrying three people drifted offshore after its outboard engine failed, but cooperation between communities in Penghu brought the passengers safely back to port.

The boat was one nautical mile southwest of Xili when the failure occurred. The sea had southeasterly winds, gusts reaching force 8, moderate waves and wave heights of about 2 to 3 meters.

The Penghu Coast Guard received the emergency report at 4:35 p.m. on the 3rd. Its patrol boat 10091 reached the scene and found that both the people and the boat were safe. The patrol vessel stayed alongside as an escort while the patrol district sought another boat to tow the vessel.

Penghu County Councilor Chen Peizhen, from Wang’an, contacted Hong Ya-wen, the village chief of Fenggui in Magong, to ask for help. Hong quickly contacted local residents, who sent the Hecheng speedboat to tow the disabled vessel.

Hong said, “One phone call, one act of trust, and nobody asked many questions. We only thought: if we can help, we should help.” The boat eventually returned safely to Magong Port, with the Coast Guard continuing its escort.
