Disney Reveals Marvel's New 'X-Men' Cast, 'Frozen 3' at D23 Fan Event

Matthew McConaughey is making his return to the big screen after more than five years with "The Rivals of Amziah King," an indie film set in the American Southwest. McConaughey, an Oscar-winning actor, cited the "joy, the soul, the humor, the music, the poetry, the mythology, original time, place, and space" as reasons for choosing the project. The film, written and directed by Andrew Patterson, stars McConaughey as a charismatic local honey producer. His character, Amziah King, balances tending his beehives with playing banjo in a folk band. McConaughey was drawn to the characters' deep connections, their use of music and humor to survive, and Amziah's ability to foster a sense of belonging. "Amziah is a guy who really, at the heart of himself, gives people belonging, helps people belong," McConaughey told AFP. "This wasn't the reason I did it, but in hindsight, I go: 'That's a nice thing to put out there into the world, and share with people.'" McConaughey had stepped away from movies after 2019's "The Gentlemen" to focus on writing his memoir, "Greenlights." Although he appeared in "The Lost Bus" last year, that film was shot before "The Rivals of Amziah King" wrapped. The new film blends genres including crime, comedy, musical, and drama. It follows King's journey as he reconnects with Kateri, a young Native American woman played by Angelina LookingGlass, whom he had previously taken in with his late wife. King helps her integrate into the community, passing on his leadership role, but she soon discovers the honey business is not as sweet as it appears. LookingGlass described her character as a "strong Indigenous woman" who is often underestimated but proves her capabilities. Director Andrew Patterson, known for his debut film "The Vast of Night," was inspired to center the story around a determined Native American woman. "She just uses her intellect and resourcefulness. And I was excited to put that kind of character into the world," Patterson said. He noted that McConaughey was not initially part of his plans for the film.
