Displaced residents begin returning to Bule, Ituri under MONUSCO protection

The gradual return of residents to Bule, located in the Djugu territory of Ituri province, has begun after several months of displacement caused by repeated clashes between the FARDC and the Convention for the Popular Revolution (CRP) militia. This movement follows an appeal made by the provincial governor during a visit to the area.

Over 50,000 displaced individuals had been living at the Plaine Savo displacement site for nearly nine months, approximately five kilometers from their homes. A tentative but steady return to Bule has been observed since last Wednesday, with the displaced responding to the provincial authorities' assurances of security. MONUSCO has also bolstered its presence, increasing patrols to protect civilians and facilitate their return.

However, significant challenges persist. Upon returning, some residents found their homes destroyed and belongings looted, prompting them to seek assistance from the government and humanitarian organizations for resettlement and social reintegration. Lingering mistrust between a segment of the population and the FARDC, accused of human rights violations, contributes to the reluctance of some to return, despite calls to do so.

Adding to the concerns is the threat of explosive devices. Two such devices were discovered in central Bule last Thursday, heightening residents' anxiety. The community is urging authorities to clear the area of these devices to ensure a safe and sustainable return for all displaced persons.
