DJI's new e-bike motor delivers serious power, but riders should use it carefully

The DJI Avinox M2S motor gives the Propain Ekano 3 AL enough force to make a steep climb feel almost like a descent, but the review warns that riders need to manage that power carefully.

Tested on a route from Unternberg to the Hochwechsel in Austria, the motor responded smoothly across its Auto, Eco, Trail and Turbo settings. It remained very quiet while delivering what the reviewer described as tractor-like strength. That power could continue longer than desired, however, so the review recommends setting the motor's overrun function to zero in every mode.

The boost function requires similar restraint. Activated with the left thumb, it delivers up to 150 newton-meters for as long as 60 seconds. Used while climbing, the extra force can lift the front wheel if the rider does not stop pedaling and assistance together when approaching an obstacle.

The test reached the 1,743-meter summit after one hour and 20 minutes and 1,100 meters of climbing. At that point, the 600-Wh battery had fallen to 25%. Because the 24-kilogram bike still had to cover sections that were not downhill, the rider switched to Eco mode to conserve power. After completing 40 kilometers and 1,200 meters of total elevation gain, the display showed 4%.

The tested configuration costs 9,556 euros. Its equipment includes an aluminum frame, Fox suspension, SRAM X0 electronic shifting and Shimano XTR brakes. The review says buyers should consider Propain's optional 800-Wh battery for greater reserve.
