DN Debate: “The Tidö Government Is the Most Liberal in Modern Times”

“The Tidö government is the most liberal in modern times,” Liberal Party leader Simona Mohamsson writes as she takes stock of four years under the agreement. Her argument is aimed at critics who accuse the Liberals of abandoning social liberalism.

Mohamsson says the reforms achieved by the coalition have expanded people’s ability to shape their own lives. She argues that the record surpasses that of both the Bildt and Reinfeldt governments in making Sweden a freer country.

She places criminal policy first. Before the change of government in 2022, Sweden recorded one shooting a day and nearly one fatal shooting a week, she writes. Four years later, shootings have fallen by more than 70 percent. Mohamsson credits the police’s intensive work, while also highlighting the Tidö parties’ expansion of law-enforcement powers against organized crime.

The measures she cites include expanded preventive covert coercive powers, the creation of police security zones, and easier information sharing among police, social services, and schools. New confiscation rules have also made it easier to seize luxury goods from criminals.

Mohamsson links the changes in criminal policy to social-policy reforms. She says the new Social Services Act places greater emphasis on prevention, earlier intervention, and a clearer crime-prevention responsibility. She gives particular weight to the effect of the government’s policies in Sweden’s disadvantaged areas, where she says gang power has grown for years at the expense of residents’ freedom.
